Day Trip From New York: Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City – The Boardwalk’s Newest Resort

If there’s on thing Atlantic City doesn’t need it’s another cookie cutter casino.

Over the past 6 years, 5 major properties shut down on Jersey’s acclaimed gambling boardwalk. And there are still 7 competing casinos. So why on earth, would anyone want to open another one?

Believe it or not, the answer is simple – while it’s obvious that Atlantic City doesn’t lack slot machines or poker tables, it’s missing next level of entertainment. Hard Rock wants to change that.

The new Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City property has over 2,100 slot machines and 120 table games, but it betting on more than just more gambling opportunities.

The new 17-acre boarward resort, which opened last month, boasts 20 restaurants (including flashy dessert spot Sugar Factory and Greenich Village’s italian favorite Il Mulino). There’s a gym and a spa – which are standard hotel fare–but on top of that, the hotel itself is a mecca of a museum for any music lover.

It’s home to seven stages (one of which is a 7,000 person arena, another a theater that fits 2,000) bringing an unprecedented amount of entertainment to the neighborhood. Acts big and small fill each stage so that there’s never a silent night. Upcoming ones range the gamut in music taste – there’s everything from Rascal Flatts, to Pat Benatar, and even Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

As if that wasn’t enough, tucked in every corner is a piece of rock and roll history from  Hard Rock’s impressive memorabilia collection. Any Beatles fan will want to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the property to find John Lennon’s glasses, plus his hand written lyrics to Imagine. You can also see pieces from icons like Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and David Bowie. But our favorite installation has to be the room dedicated to Jersey’s best talent, which includes pieces from Bon Jovi, Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Whitney Houston, the E Street Band, and Lauryn Hill

If you chose to stay at the property you can rock out even harder. Guests who are longing for a bit of nostalgia can request to have a Crosley turntable in their room. They’ll be able to  pan through a curated selection of records to enjoy on vinyl. Rather make your own music? Turns out that’s an option too. Similar to checking out a library card, only undoubtedly cooler, guests can ‘check out’ one of 20 Fender Guitars during their stay. There’s the option to borrow legendary Stratocasters, telecasters, and bass guitars. Each one is delivered to a guest’s room with a Fender floor amp and Nixon headphones – so they can have a personal jam session.

The stakes are high for any property that’s trying to earn it’s spot on the Atlantic Boardwalk. But it seems Hard Rock is playing its best cards and is destined to become a number one hit. For more information on the resort, restaurants, and music performances click here

NYC Dessert Spots: Stax Ice Cream

NYC DessertThere’s no shortage of dessert options in a city like New York—you can get everything from mochi to semifreddo in a few short blocks. Hey, there’s even options to suit specialty diets – ones that are sugar-free, dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free. The lists are simply endless.

And yet, nearly two years ago, I found myself mourning the loss of a dessert spot that barely existed for more than a few months. Nestled downtown on Christopher Street was a place called Holey Donuts – where a fresh, hot donut could be topped with anything you wished, and then was filled with ice cream.

It was nothing short of heavenly, and when it closed within a year after opening, my sugar-loving heart mourned.
But now, it’s found hope once more. Stax a new dessert café on the edge of Chinatown delivers the decadent combo of ice cream and donuts once more, in the form of a ‘cremella.’

Now I know what you’re thinking – other places do donuts and ice cream. Stuffed in the East Village sells their “cruff.” Ice and Vice on East Broadway offers up a similar combo treat as well. But here’s the standout difference: the donuts at Stax are served warm.

You get this decadent combination of hot and cold that’s reminiscent of the classic brownie sundae, and it’s simply irresistible.

Available in regular, glazed, or chocolate glazed, visitors can top their donuts with a variety of drizzle sauces (caramel, chocolate), sprinkle on toppings (like fruit pebbles or brownie bits), and then fill it with one of the homemade ice cream flavors that the shop makes on site.

Stand out options? The popular Ube flavor (that’s made from purple yams), milk tea (which tastes exactly like bubble tea), and cornflake bourbon.

If you’re an ice cream lover, it’s definitely worth a visit. Check them out  for more info.

Family Activities in NYC: National Geographic Encounter: Ocean Odyssey

Looking for family activities in NYC? Look no further.

National Geographic’s new digitally immersive experience, Ocean Odyssey, has made a splash in Times Square.

Upon entering the exhibit, visitors are treated to a flurry of interactive content that’s as close to the deep sea as you can get—without strapping on scuba gear. The self-guided walking tour lets attendees travel through the world’s various ocean environments. They can step on interactive bio-luminescent reefs, ‘play’ with interactive seals, and watch with awe as sharks, manta rays, dolphins and more whisk through 360-degree spaces. There’s even a kelp maze (which coincidentally, this writer got stuck in, for more than a few minutes) and a 3-D ocean diving experience.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES IN NYC: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ENCOUNTER: OCEAN ODYSSEY

At the end of the exhibition, National Geographic installed tablets to help kids learn more about ocean conservation and how families can take steps to be a little more environmentally conscious.

The team that assembled the project clearly spared nothing; the spaces captivate the senses and are incredibly visually detailed. The entire space is a testament to how technology can bring the furthest corners of the world, or the deepest ocean depths, to life – anywhere. Ocean Odyssey is the exact opposite of a cheese-y Times Square museum experience.

If you’re planning to go – keep in mind that it might be a little much for young visitors (certain nature scenes are reflective of the circle of life) but it’d be a definite hit with older kids who love adventure and are strong visual learners.

NYC Events: #CreateGood by Brit + Co

Today marks the opening of #CreateGood, a pop-up by Brit + Co. Founded by Brit Morin, the unique media platform has encouraged users to create, learn, and engage for nearly six years.

Nestled on the borders of SoHo and Chinatown, this is the West-Coast based outlet’s first foray into NYC and the 5-day experience is aiming to make a brightly-colored splash.

But don’t be fooled by its well decorated interior (which mimics the aesthetic the site is known for), this project is about more than Instagram likes.

True to form, Morin and her team created an interactive space that seeks to inspire, connect, and educate all who enter it. It’s a living organism that transforms from morning to night, and there’s always something new to see.

During the day, the area acts as a curated museum with installations that engage the five senses, and includes hands-on activities – like arcade games that you can play to raise money for charity.

By the early evening room evolves to host panels on different topics each night– from business building, to style, art, and more. Each session features speakers that range in age from 12 to 96 years old, it’s a diverse lineup that brings a lot to the table.

Into the late evening #CreateGood changes into a workshop space, where experts teach classes on topics like how to minimalize your life, design your own stationary, change up your meal-prep and more.

But that’s not all – there’s also special sessions that feature fitness classes from dance-cardio studio 305 Fitness and family-friendly brunches (one features puppies, another Disney-sponsored activities).

It’s clear from the itinerary alone that Morin and her team of fearless creatives want to inspire New York and it’s visitors to literally create and do good and it’s definitely worth a stop this weekend. For more information on #CreateGood click here.

Joshua Radin Returns to NYC for Sirius XM Coffee House Tour

Joshua Radin NYCIt’s the early 2000’s and a screenplay writer is struggling with a classic case of writer’s block. To ease his mind, he turns to his new guitar. He’s never played before but decides that taking a break to learn a chord or two will help him unwind.

Each time he gets stuck, he goes back to the instrument. Learning the notes slowly becomes a form of meditation. Mastering one chord, then another, then a cover song, or four.

At an open mic night with friends, he plays a cover song for his first crowd. A local club booker takes him aside and offers up a business card, “You can have a gig here, but you have to bring 20 people.”

And so begins the music career of Joshua Radin, who at the age of 30 picked up a guitar for the very first time.

“A year after learning the g chord, I signed with a major label. It was surreal,” Radin shared.

Nearly a decade later, Radin has continued to play music. And while he currently calls LA home, it’s clear he has always had an affinity for New York. He lived Downtown for a decade, bouncing between the East and West Village. The first EP he ever released, “First between 3rd and 4th,” pays homage to one of those very apartments.

He’s composed music while wandering city sidewalks, and even met his manager while playing at The Living Room. But his favorite NY memory? Playing the Bowery Ballroom for the first time.

“It was maybe 12 years ago, I fell into this new career and I had all these fans. I just started touring and had no idea what I was doing. But that was my favorite place to go to concerts and all of a sudden instead of being in the crowd, I was on that stage. I remember in mind thinking it’s never gonna get better than this,” he said.

Radin has since amassed a loyal following of people who really connect with his music. And if you’ve ever had the chance to hear him play, you’d understand why. His acoustic melodies are beautiful, and his lyrics full of honesty, “I just wanted to write my truth,” he said of his music.

But aside from his raw lyrics, Radin’s shows are spectacular in their own right. His albums, while well produced as any, do no justice to his live talent and stage presence. Shows with large crowds, feel intimate, as he shares the origins and inspirations behind his music.

“I really want people to just feel like they’re in my living room,” Radin shared.

His current tour, with Brandon Jenner and Rachael Yamagata, drives that idea home.

“There’s no specific set list, I’m getting on stage with a guitar and winging it,” Radin explained.

The casual format is freeing and has made each show of the tour its own spontaneous entity.

“I don’t often get to play in little bars, I’m usually in big theaters, so this tour has reminded me a lot of where I started, and it’s felt really good and nostalgic.”

“I still pinch myself, I’m getting paid to pursue my hobby, my meditative device. I don’t see how I could get luckier, and I don’t take it for granted.”

When asked if he was excited to be back in NY, he responded with enthusiasm.

“I still come back to New York, even when I’m not touring, to see friends and just hang out and fill my soul with the energy of NYC,” he said and added, “And also the pizza, I’m salivating just thinking about Prince Street Pizza.”

“New York really is my favorite city in the world to play, because it’s New York.”

And play he will.

You can catch Joshua Radin tonight at the Gramercy Theatre as part of Sirius XM’s Coffee House Tour. Tickets are available here.
