Elie Hirschfeld Bestowed Prestigious Honor By Brown University

Brown University bestowed its highest alumni honor on Elie Hirschfeld

Iconic New York developer, philanthropist and patron of the arts, Elie Hirschfeld has been bestowed the prestigious honor of the Brown Bear Award by the Brown University Alumni Association.

The “Brown Bear” is the highest honor awarded by the Alumni Association in recognition for many years of volunteer work to distinguished graduates of one of America’s most venerated Ivy League institutions.

Among the other luminaries on this short and distinguished list of previous honorees are; John D. Rockefeller, former Chairman of Chase Bank and founder of the Rockefeller Center; Former New York Public Library Chairman, Richard B. Saloman; Lyman Bloomingdale, Former IBM Chairman, Thomas Watson, and Alva Way, the former chairman of American Express and Travelers Corporation.

Brown University provided me the foundation and framework I needed to reach my potential as a businessman, philanthropist and volunteer— and as importantly — as a man who could help other people to do the same,” said Elie Hirschfeld.

“I consider it my duty … and privilege to give back to this school which has produced some of the finest American  businessmen, philanthropists and volunteers in our history.”

In addition to providing years of financial and other support to his alma mater, The celebrated real estate mogul, philanthropist, athlete and patron of the arts has had a significant hand in the development and re-purposing of many prominent city properties including Riverside South, The Grand Sutton, Park Avenue Court, The Hotel Pennsylvania and The Exchange Tower.

But Hirschfeld’s focus has always extended far beyond any single project. His visionary collaborations with such prominent partners as Silverstein Properties, The Zeckendorf Organization, The Donald Trump Organization and others have yielded some of the more spectacular projects in the history of the city.

And while his business accomplishments are many, it may be his seemingly endless charitable endeavors that may be his most lasting legacy. He launched the Hirschfeld Foundation to channel his philanthropic efforts in support of education, healthcare, athletics and Jewish causes.

“My personal history of giving began when I was a student at Brown University,” Hirschfeld says.

“I became President of Brown’s Hillel and was elected President of my Senior Class. I was inspired by both Brown and Hillel to do more for others and to seek to improve the world. I went on to support numerous educational institutions, hospitals, Jewish organizations, and other non-profit groups. I created the Hirschfeld Foundation to expand my personal efforts.”

Now those efforts on behalf of Brown and other causes are being recognized by the University he cherishes.

Noted New York developer and accomplished athlete Elie Hirschfeld performed at a peak level when he placed 14th in his 65-to-69-year-old age group at the New York City Triathlon earlier this month.

Each year, thousands of athletes brave the waters of the mighty Hudson River before biking along Manhattan’s West Side highway. Finally, athletes put on their running shoes for a run through New York’s famed Central Park in the final stage of this iconic race.

Nassau County Museum of Art to Launch “New York, New York” Exhibition

The Nassau County Museum of Art will launch an exhibition that celebrates the beauty and the majesty of our beautiful city with “New York, New York” from July 22 and running through November 5.

From the extraordinary to the everyday, “New York, New York” reveals the daily life of the city’s populace at work, in their homes, on the streets, and at leisure, enjoying the parks, the beaches, the clubs and the bars of the city. In oils, works on paper, photography, prints and sculpture, the works on view explore the city from the early years of the last century almost to the present day.

Iconic New York developer and art collector, Elie Hirschfeld has lent four of his prized paintings to the exhibition, demonstrating his devotion both to the arts and the city he has helped shape for nearly 50 years.

“This is an exhibition that particularly resonates with me because of my love for New York and each of the pieces from my collection are symbols of my connection to the greatest city on earth,” Elie Hirschfeld said.

“I was more than happy to share them for this special salute to New York so that other people could appreciate how it inspired so many great artists.”

Elie Hirschfeld’s pieces provide a diverse, but uniformly moving view of the city from an eclectic collection of masters.

Arman’s Statue of Liberty is a 1980s masterpiece that entices the eye to explore its many layers of diverse perspectives in interpretation. Each piece of the original statue is divided and staggered, retaining its original forms despite the image of deconstruction.

Arguably America’s greatest female painter, Georgia O’Keefe, created  the “Brooklyn Bridge” in 1949 and it was considered a farewell tribute to the city of New York before she moved to New Mexico that same year.

Meanwhile, Mark Rothko’s 1937 “Subway Station” is Elie Hirschfeld’s personal favorite.

“Actually, it’s a Rothkowitz, painted months before he changed his name,” he explained. “This is about how the future is coming into the station, the famous Rothko red representing and emphasizing that idea.”

Red Grooms painted “Seventh Ave Between 22nd & 21st St. N.Y.C. in 1967 and it remains as vibrant today offering a vivid look at a thoroughfare that bridges blocks of New York City a half century since it was created.

Elie Hirschfeld will be feted at the Gala opening on July 21.

“I truly hope that many New Yorkers and people from around the world are able to see this moving exhibition to see how our city can inspire great artists to create masterpieces like these,” Elie Hirschfeld said.

“Just one more reason why I love New York!”
