Léman Manhattan’s Third Annual Halloween Bash

Last weekend, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School hosted its third annual Halloween Bash.

The spooktacular event took place in the historic Broad St Ballroom at 41 Broad Street, and welcomed children ages infant through 3rd grade along with their parents.

There was no shortage of original costumes, creativeness, and fun! We saw fairies, Pokémons, a lion family and many more incredible costumes throughout the day.

The Halloween Bash also featured pumpkin decorating (because we all know, it’s not Halloween without pumpkins!), spooky treats (of course!), monster manicures (nailed it!), face painting and a costume parade.

The children could get active by trying out martial arts with Square Circle New York, fitness and tumbling with PopFit Kids, explore science experiments with Brooklyn Robot Foundry, as well as a free exploration with The Little Gym, and become spellbound by a magic show and live musical performance by Carnegie Hall artists.

Needless to say, we’ve already got a bunch of inspiration for our Halloween outfits next year!

‘Little Chefs’ Pop Up Restaurant with Léman

This Friday, July 14 at 1 p.m. the 4th-6th grade campers from Léman Manhattan Preparatory School will join Chefs Will Frischeisen and Ian Charles to host a pop-up restaurant at Morris Cafe. They are designing a creative menu inspired by the week-long program, which includes lessons in the kitchen along with adventures to green markets, specialty shops and other foodie places.

Downtown Manhattan has become a popular scene for restaurants, which is why Camp Léman’s Culinary Workshop gives potential chefs-in-the-making real world culinary experiences. Their goal is to expand children’s palates as well as increase their awareness regarding nutrition and what goes into food and its preparation.

Each session, the campers develop a menu based on what has inspired them that week. For example, one year during a heat wave, they created a cold menu of poached fish, chilled gazpacho, and homemade stone fruit popsicles.

For this week’s camp, the children have been to Eataly where they bought ingredients to make pasta from scratch, the Teaching Garden on Governors Island where they learned about edible plants and tasted flowers, and Union Square Greenmarket and the Garden of Eden market to purchase ingredients for their restaurant lunch on Friday.

Downtown spoke to a few of the campers about what they’ve enjoyed most so far.

“Making pasta dough by hand was really cool!” said Maia.

“I love that we’re able to create a meal for our parents. It feels like we are running our restaurant. So much fun! I’ve come for three years now and every year is better than the last,” said Eden.

“I liked making pasta and different sauces!” said Lex.

“I like coming in every day and seeing my friends. I look forward to it every day! And if we behave, Chef Will buys us ice cream while we brainstorm our menu,” said Ava.

Nandini, another student, said, “I like being with old friends and also making new friends.”

And Juliet especially liked learning new things, saying, “I’m always looking to cook something new each day.”

Lastly, we talked to Chef Will Frischeisen.

“It’s always a real treat for Chef Ian and me to spend time with these great kids and watch as they develop their culinary ideas and understanding of what goes in to real restaurant style cooking,” he said about the camp.

Léman’s culinary camp brings a lot to the table for these young campers and has the potential to create a positive future for children and the culinary industry. By ending it with a pop-up restaurant, it allows the students’ families to participate and support their journey at this incredible culinary camp.

The next culinary camp is scheduled for 9-13-year-olds and will take place the week of July 24concluding with another pop-up restaurant on July 28. We can’t wait to see what they’re cooking up — this time and the next!

On Saturday, Jun. 4, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School celebrated its fourth senior graduating class, as well as its 10th academic year anniversary. To mark the graduation and its anniversary, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School had invited Story Musgrave — a NASA scientist-astronaut — to give the new graduates a few word of advice.

In turn, Story Musgrave captivated the attendees with an inspiring speech, and Léman Manhattan Preparatory School was proud to send the graduating class off to their students’ colleges of choice, including Princeton University, Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia.

The graduation also marked the school’s tenth academic year, about which Drew Alexander — head of the school — said: “With graduation, the Léman community celebrates the tremendous accomplishments of our seniors as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. Students leave Léman confident, engaged critical thinkers, ready to have a positive impact on their communities and beyond. It is a proud day for Léman students, parents, faculty and staff as we celebrate our fourth graduating class and a decade of delivering a truly international education in New York City.”

Léman Prep Joins Elite Diploma Program

upper school picks-22

Léman Manhattan Preparatory School solidified its reputation as an innovative private school offering a rich, diverse college preparatory curriculum while promoting international mindedness with today’s announcement of it becoming an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Diploma Programme (DP).

Léman will be one of only four private schools in Manhattan that offer the IB Diploma, universally recognized by more than 1,800 universities representing 75 countries.  According to a 2012 survey by the International Graduate Insight Group, college acceptance rates at 20 Ivy League and top-tier colleges and universities for applicants with an International Baccalaureate Diploma were at most schools double the rate of non-IB applicants.

“We are proud that Léman has earned a reputation for offering a personalized, rigorous, and globally-minded education, and are delighted to become a member of this renowned global community,” said Drew Alexander, Head of School. “As educators, we are ever mindful of the increasingly competitive college and career searches in which our students will find themselves, and we want them to be as well-prepared as possible for the challenges and opportunities that await them. It is no coincidence that Léman and the IB Programme share a commitment to developing critical thinking skills and empathy for other cultures.”

Designed to give students a broad, well-rounded international education, the IB Programme provides them with the comprehensive skills needed for success at college and beyond. Its unique and innovative approach to learning means both students and teachers are genuinely engaged with the curriculum and benefit from being a part of an unparalleled global network.  The IB Diploma Programme, a two-year, optional program, will be offered to Léman’s 11th graders beginning in the fall of 2014; the graduating class of 2016 will be the first to have completed the IB Diploma Programme.

In addition to a rigorous academic schedule that includes mastery of a second language, students who graduate with the IB DP will have completed a designated number of community service hours; Theory of Knowledge, a course intended to provide students a broader understanding of their different school subjects, as well as creating great open-mindedness; and a self-directed, in-depth study from any of their courses, culminating in 4,000-word extended essay.
