Inside Dîner en Blanc with Kim Schulster

I’ve had the pleasure of attending Dîner en Blanc New York, for the past 4 years. I’m not sure which is actually better, attending and being a part of Dîner en Blanc or having this extraordinary opportunity to meet new friends whom you would never have the opportunity to meet otherwise.

We caught up with Kim Schulster, Manager of Volunteer Recruitment for Dîner en Blanc, with her first year back in 2011.

Kim is responsible for securing and training all volunteers and Group Leaders. Group leaders escort groups of guests up to around 5000 people from 26 meeting points around the city. Then safely and with much care, the leaders escort these groups to the secret location.

Each leader not only has the difficult job of making sure everyone on their list arrives at the DEB secret location but that they take good care of their groups throughout the evening.

This year, Kim is overseeing 126 volunteers who all love Dîner en Blanc.

How do you make it appear seamless?

Kim Schulster: We put our focus on the members — members are guests of the event — they are the ones who help us to make DEB special each and every year. We read all the comments and answer all emails. DEB is all about what we see and hear from the leaders and volunteers who work full-time. They are the ones who make it fun. We have the leaders fill out a form each year, then use this information to make the experience even better the following year

So is it all based solely on member feedback?

KS: Yes. Once you attend you become a member the following year. Members can actually purchase an absentee membership but not show up the year that they purchase but are allowed to come the following year.

How long have you been in the event planning industry?

KS: I’ve worked in this industry for 17 years. I’ve been with DEB since 2011. In 2013 I decided to launch my freelance career. Then the following year I came back to DEB. I’ve worked for several companies as a freelancer, including AirbnbNike and the incredibly stunning Ian Schrager Hôtel Public, to name a few.

What other DEB events have you worked or attended?

KS: I have been lucky enough to go to DEB Miami, LA, and DC. [They] were all magical!

Take us through your DEB evening.

KS: My first focus is on the members and my group leaders. To be honest, when everyone starts arriving, it’s a controlled chaos. I hold my breath for it seems like 20 mins. Then, the first hour or so, I see everyone finding their space, setting up their creative tables and settling in. Slowly but surely I watch it all come together and it’s just breathless!

Do you ever have time to enjoy and relax during the event?

KS: Yes, I enjoy the event once I know the members are settled. It’s a delicate balance. I actually go thru the same process as the members. I bring my table and chairs. You must experience it to be able to talk about it and to have the knowledge to make it better each year.

What are you anticipating will be the most talked about this year?

KS: Simply another marvelous time, good weather, and great energy. To watch this labor of love, all 5,000 or so members, carefully prepare their meals with precision, chairs, table, flat wear, glasses and decor for their tables is like watching a movie unfold in the cutting room.

How in the world do you work and experience it all at the same time?

KS: For me it’s simple, I have wonderful friends and we plan it out perfectly. We each bring 2 plates, champagne glasses, flatware etc, which then cuts down on one person having to bring it all. You know, romance is a big part of it for many. But it’s also about my best friends, watching them experience DEB for the first time is magical, being able to give this experience to someone else is even more special. I’m blessed to have made such great friends from the many incredible DEB events and to have the ability to be there for the same reasons as the many members.

KS: Memorable.

UBM Fashion Hosts First-Ever Consumer-Facing Show

Beginning this Sunday, August 6th, UBM Fashion at NY Women’s, Intermezzo Collections will debut its first-ever “VINTAGE (at) Intermezzo” consumer-facing fair in the heart of Manhattan. Curated by Bridgette Morphew of Morphew Concept, the fair will run from Sunday, August 6th through Tuesday, August 8th at the Javits Center, 655 W 34th Street, New York, NY 10001.

Fashion fans will be able to access an epicenter of vintage shopping from a variety of top brands in fashion.

The selection of vintage dealers will be showcasing their one-of-a-kind apparel and accessories collections for the entire fashion community to have access to the best in vintage design, style, and period pieces. Each vintage dealer will be showcasing a unique facet of the industry with product available for wholesale and retail.

The product will range from luxury vintage designer, including Missoni and Versace, gowns and furs, to rare Victorian and Asian pieces such as Issey Miyake, alongside accessible active and sportswear, denim, T-shirts, and personal pieces from Norma Kamali‘s closet from as early as the turn of the century.

Intermezzo Collections first debuted its B2B VINTAGE (at) Intermezzo neighborhood at the NY Women’s May Show with returning curator and industry expert, Bridgette Morphew of Morphew Concept. Coming off of the success of this show, matched with the consumer demand for authenticity in their purchases, opening up the show to the public was the evident next step.

“Vintage brings provenance to one’s wardrobe and represents another time, when clothing and accessories were not mass produced but crafted by hand with a true love for the actual product itself. It speaks to the journey that has brought us to today and influences the way we see ourselves in the future,” said Peter Berta, Show Director.

Fashion icon and longtime fan of the Intermezzo Collection show, Iris Apfel, will be joining the esteemed designer Norma Kamali as well as Stephanie Solomon, the Vice President and Fashion Director at Lord & Taylor for a panel discussion moderated by Lauren Parker, Editor in Chief of Accessories Magazine on the benefits of vintage, and how retailers can use it to set their stores apart. The ‘Value of Vintage’ panel will be hosted on the Monday of the show at 2 p.m. in the Crystal Palace.

The fair will also include a Spring/Summer 2018 Trend Presentation on Sunday, August 6 at 2 p. m. and gives a detailed look at what’s driving the five biggest trends for the SS18 with a focus on accessories.

On Tuesday, at 10 a.m. there will be a Q&A with Rachel Shechtman, founder of themed retailer STORY. Called “The Compelling Curation: The Art of Storytelling,” Shechtman will talk about creating a brick-and-mortar experience that feels like a live webpage with its ever-changing themes, products and point of view.

The Seaport Youthmarket Should Be Your Next Stop

The Youthmarket sells greens that look too good to eat.

If you’re familiar with the Greenmarkets around New York City, then it’s time to become acquainted with the Seaport Youthmarket. This is a network of urban farm stands operated by neighborhood youth, supplied by local farmers, and designed to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to communities throughout New York City.

This spinoff of the regular urban Greenmarket project targets younger members of the community from lower income areas of the city. The market trains the community to operate a farm stand as part of a miniature business in their neighborhood. As a chapter of the Greenmarket program, the Seaport Youthmarket sells high quality, fresh fruit and vegetables grown by regional markets, in efforts to encourage the consumption of healthy produce and the maintenance of a balanced diet. The key objectives of the program are bolstered by an effective strategy of business training, involving promotion, merchandising, and customer service. Additionally, the program provides tours around the Union Square Greenmarket for youth participants to better understand the inner mechanisms of a farmer’s market.

NYC Restaurant Week Summer 2014

Foodies, rejoice! Restaurants participating in NYC Restaurant Week are now taking reservations. From July 21st to August 15th, more than 300 of the city’s top restaurants will be showcasing specially-priced menus Mondays through Fridays, with Sundays optional. New participants this year feature soul food and Australian fare, expanding the diversity of cuisines that the event has to offer. Three course prix-fixe lunches are priced reasonably at $25 while three-course prix-fixe dinners are $38 (excluding beverages, gratuity and taxes).

Since its start in 1992, Restaurant Week, which is held twice a year, has become a highlight of New York City’s calendar of events, allowing everyone to savor the taste of high-end restaurants for a fraction of the usual price. The program serves to boost the popularity of the city’s restaurant industry, advertising up-and-coming restaurants such as Murray’s Cheese Bar in Greenwich Village, and Socarrat Paella Bar in Nolita, which are new additions to the list of participants this year.
