Milk and Cream Cereal Bar

Gone are the days when cereal was just for breakfast and only acceptable to eat as a child. New York lets us have cereal whenever and however we want it – whether it’s topped on a cake or mixed in a soft serve. Milk & Cream Cereal Bar recently opened their doors in Chinatown, giving Kith’s cereal treats and Milk Bar’s cereal soft serve a little competition. Downtown tested Milk & Cream Bar’s desserts, all in the name of research of course.

Milk & Cream Cereal Bar’s menu allows you to customize your own dessert, from cereal bowls to ice cream swirls and milkshakes. We highly recommend the ice cream swirl, mixing in one cereal with ice cream. Vanilla or cookie dough ice cream? Let’s be honest, that’s hardly a question: cookie dough ALWAYS wins. The hardest part is choosing between all the cereals and toppings.

We might be adults, but choosing cereal certainly does not get easier as we get older. Toppings include gummy bears, teddy grahams and cookie crunches, as well as healthier options such as fruits and nuts. Now that’s what we call balance. Luckily, you can add as many toppings as you want if you’re willing to pay a little extra. Last but not least, add a drizzle of your choice before you enjoy your feast!
If all of this is a little overwhelming, Milk & Cream Cereal Bar also offers specials. Each special involves cereals and toppings that go together perfectly, taking away the stress of deciding between all those options. You can’t go wrong with the big apple pie or peanut jelly crumble!

The Finest French Pastries at Canelé by Céline

When it comes to food in Lower Manhattan, you can find countless eateries on nearly every street of the busy and bustling city. Everything from small coffee shops, upscale restaurants, and your favorite chain bakeries always provides a variety to choose from. Nearly anything you might crave at any time of the day can be found Downtown, but one of New York’s true hidden gems can only be found above 23rd Street: Canelé by Céline.

Located exclusively in its Upper East Side location, Canelé by Céline is the only boutique in Manhattan with mini French pastries that will bring your taste buds right to the heart of France in a single bite.

Your palette is first greeted by the pastry’s caramelized crust, and it slowly gives way to the moist custard-like center. The soft texture of the tenderly elegant and sophisticated canelé combined with the rich flavor of Céline’s final creations will keep you wanting more with each bite.

Céline’s canelés have an authentic French Taste that can’t be found in any other Manhattan eatery. As the only shop catered specifically to canelés and French financiers, Canelé by Céline’s feature many different variations of the delicate treat.

“Even in France they don’t really play with the different flavors,” Céline said when asked about what makes her boutique different from other canelé locations in Manhattan. “The most common one is vanilla base with rum, and I thought it would be nice to add more variety, especially when you have one product.”

Both sweet and savory flavors can be found on the daily menu with choices that are strictly unique to the boutique; from the most popular vanilla and dark chocolate pastries, to the savory Parmesan cheese and basil pesto canelés. Céline’s wide array of flavors almost always run out by the end of each day. It’s hard to refrain after you’ve had just one, and there’s no question why after you’ve indulged in Céline’s perfect creations.

“When you have one of the mini canelés, you want to try another flavor,” Céline continued.

Aside from the vanilla and dark chocolate flavors, the caramel and pistachio seem to be two of the other most popular pastries at the Upper East Side boutique. July’s flavor of the month, raspberry, also seems to be doing so well that they are considering placing it on the shop’s permanent menu. However, Céline’s personal favorites are the pistachio and lemon.

When asked about a flavor for Downtown, Céline recommends both sweet and savory, noting the difference that having a combination really makes. She recommends the caramel and raspberry for sweet, and the black truffle for savory.

“That’ll be the one people will love,” Céline said.

Canelé by Céline is one of Manhattan’s best hidden gems. When a little Upper East Side shop became available just seven months ago, Céline took the opportunity right away. Ever since then, she’s experimented with all types of new flavors and she continues to try new ones when they come to mind. Although her pastries can only be found at her 82nd Street boutique and in select hotels, she is looking to expand her reach and open another shop further down the island.

“I’d love to go Downtown,” Céline said. “I’d love to be in SoHo or TriBeCa.”

Lower Manhattan will hopefully be home to a new Canelé by Céline boutique in the next few years. The aroma of the freshly baked mini French pastries will be enough to lure you in and keep you coming back for more. Canelé by Céline is one not to miss.

With July well under way, it’s time to treat your taste buds to yet another sweet delicacy this summer. This cool and creamy vegan ice cream prepared right in the heart of your own home: the kitchen.

July has been dubbed National Ice Cream Month for the past 30 years, ever since President Ronald Reagan’s designation in 1984. Ignoring the month’s classification would be wrong (it’s presidential orders!).

Thanks to German native cookbook author, Attila Hildmann, it’s time to ditch your old friends Ben & Jerry for some new, beloved homemade creations. In his bestselling book, Vegan for Fit, the self-taught vegan chef is making it easier than ever (and more fun!) to keep cool this month. One of the best things about his collection of recipes (besides the fact that they’re appetizing and delicious), is that their ingredients don’t include any animal products. For those who follow a vegan lifestyle, Hidlmann’s recipes are the perfect combination of ingredients to fit your diet. And for those who aren’t vegan, it would be a shame not to try these treats!

Pucker up! Summer is the perfect season for anything tropical, and the juicy pineapple is no exception. Hildmann’s Pineapple Fat-Burner Ice Cream will make you feel like you’re on the beautiful beaches of South America…even if you’re just sitting comfortably on the couch in your living room. It’s tasty, flavorful, and it’s made of only two ingredients! Not to mention, it burns fat. Finding ice cream like this on store shelves is nearly impossible. Here is Hildmann’s recipe straight from his bestselling cookbook, Vegan for Fit.

Pineapple Fat-Burner Ice Cream

Preparation Time: Approx. 2 minutes plus approx. 12 hours cooling time.

Ingredients for 2-3 scoops:

  • 1 pineapple
  • 3 tablespoons agave syrup

Directions:

  1. Peel the pineapple, halve lengthwise, and remove the stalk.
  2. Cut the pineapple into small cubes until you have 2 cups.
  3. Freeze overnight.
  4. Purée with agave syrup.

And if fruity flavors aren’t your taste bud’s forte, Hildmann’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream’s rich, creamy, and irresistible flavor will keep you in the kitchen making more. This vegan dessert only takes 25 minutes, and it’s the perfect way to top off a day at the beach!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream

Preparation Time: Approx. 5 minutes plus approx. 20 minutes cooling time.

Ingredients for 2-3 scoops:

  • 3/4 cup peanut butter
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 4 tablespoons agave syrup
  • 1 pinch iodized sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground vanilla
  • 5 tablespoons organic cocoa

Directions:

  1. Mix the peanut butter, ice cubes, agave syrup, sea salt, and vinegar thoroughly.
  2. Take out half the mixture and mix with cocoa.
  3. Stir both mixtures slightly with a fork, so that they both look marbled.
  4. Set in the freezer for approx. 20 minutes to cool.

Staying cool with these delicacies is the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Month (and every other month!). Whether you’re vegan or not, Hildmann’s collection of vegan recipes is a must-have in every kitchen.

These recipes are taken directly from Attila Hildmann’s book, Vegan for Fit. You can purchase it here.

And make sure to check out more about Hildmann and his other cookbooks on his website!
